Beaches of the Gargano: caves, coves and overhangs.

The Gargano coast consists of 140 kilometers of coastline with one of the most important naturalistic heritages of the whole of Italy. The beaches of the Gargano are incredibly varied and often contain small inlets, coves and caves. Depending on the area, you can find sandy or pebble beaches, bays with stacks, giant cliffs and towers. It is often possible to reach sandy beaches suitable for children, but there are also places for those who love relaxation and a more solitary context. The Gargano, also called “the spur of Italy”, is truly one of those places that no matter how much you visit it you never know it enough, there is always another corner of paradise to discover.

spiagge del Gargano: baia delle zagare

The beaches of the Gargano from Manfredonia to Mattinata

Starting from Manfredonia and going north up to Vieste, the Gargano has a very suggestive rocky coast, with various coves and intimate beaches sometimes accessible only by sea. The first beach you meet heading north is that of Mattinata: perfect for children, large and equipped. The town of Mattinata is very characteristic and an excellent strategic base in which to stay for visiting the Gargano. Proceeding you come across what is commonly called “Mattinatella”. Easy to reach by car with a small stretch on foot and a descent in stone stairs. During the afternoon the rocky walls of the Gargano that embrace the beach will bring shade and refreshment. There are also equipped establishments.

The symbolic beaches of the Gargano

Baia delle Zagare is one of the beaches not to be missed! Here there are two stacks that have become symbols of the Gargano. There are actually three beaches in the bay: one accessible to all, one only by sea, and the last through the Baia delle Zagare hotel with the release of a pass from the municipality of Mattinata. A bit cumbersome as a process but worth it. Continuing, the beach of Pugnochiuso, pebbly and enclosed between two splendid promontories is a paradise for underwater fishermen. Difficult to access even if, once you arrive, there is no shortage of comforts. Vignanotica is a beautiful beach of sand mixed with gravel and pebbles, characterized by the presence of multiple caves and by the steep and white limestone cliff. It is a romantic and often little frequented place even if obviously in the heart of the bathing season it is populated and equipped.

Between Vieste and Peschici

Baia dei Campi is a serviced beach, 500 meters long which is accessed by passing through the homonymous campsite. Behind the beach, the pine forest offers many areas for shelter from the sun. Once in Vieste the beaches begin to have wider spaces and to be windier. Among the most famous are those of San Lorenzo and Pizzomunno, both sandy and equipped. Finally, the beaches in the Peschici area are long, equipped and often windy. Here you can also visit the historic trabucchi, ancient wooden buildings that were once used for fishing.

Curiosity

The Gargano and its beaches with breathtaking landscapes are often the location of film shoots. One of the most famous films that was partly filmed here is Wonder Woman, at the bay of Vignanotica in 2017. The stacks in the presentation poster of the Hollywood film are unmistakable.Read also: Wonder Woman on the beaches of the Gargano.
