Autumn on the Gargano: land of history and discoveries

Autumn is a somewhat snubbed season for holidays. We always tend to talk about what you can do in the summer at the beach or in the snow in winter. The truth is that autumn on the Gargano is a perfect time to switch off and treat yourself to a holiday. Mass tourism is avoided, the temperatures are pleasant and you can indulge in activities that are unacceptable at other times of the year. Let’s find out why the Gargano is an ideal destination to visit between September and November.

Farmhouse tours

The Gargano is a very fertile land, rich in quality agri-food products: first of all, extra virgin olive oil. Visiting it, you immediately notice the expanses of olive trees, but also fields of fruit trees such as citrus groves and chestnut trees.

The dairy products are also very famous such as the podolico caciocavallo, the second courses based on lake fish or the Gargano goat and the podolica cow and the traditional bread.

At the farmhouses it is possible to observe the whole process, from cultivation to harvesting to preparation and discover the real peasant life which then offers these authentic flavours. The owners of the ancient farms will be happy to show you the history of the Gargano and the values associated with the typical diet.

Autumn on the Gargano: History weekend

Gargano is a place full of stories to tell and culture. If in summer it becomes difficult to discover the villages, autumn with its mild temperatures is the best time of the year to do it. In the territory there are numerous medieval signs left. Not only in the most famous villages or Vieste and Peschici but also in those that sound more like hidden treasures. For example Monte Sant’Angelo with the evocative Sala del Tesoro.

Autumn on Gargano: Monte Sant'Angelo

The medieval period has left us neighborhoods developed in a network of narrow streets and squares onto which churches, cathedrals and castles open, linked to the name of the enlightened ruler Frederick II of Swabia.

Hiking and sports

Autumn on the Gargano can be a perfect time to dedicate yourself to the numerous excursions in the area, many of which can be done on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. Certainly among these you cannot miss a visit to the Umbra Forest.

A large green lung made up of thick vegetation that makes it shady, hence the name. A UNESCO heritage site, here the beech trees are gigantic in size with heights of over 40 meters and diameters exceeding one metre. The so-called phenomenon of “old or depressed faggette” occurs because they manage to grow despite the low altitude thanks to a special microclimate that is created here on the Gargano.

Hiring a guide to help you explore this one-of-a-kind forest is also an interesting idea. Many of the excursion routes are born from the excellent excuse of going mushroom picking, or they can be an excellent opportunity for birdwaching. In fact at the Gargano lakes but also on the mountains it is possible to admire hundreds of different birds.
